Afternoon Tea at The Lounge & Garden, Park Hyatt Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia
May 2015

The Park Hyatt is located a few minutes walk behind the old Treasury building at the end of Collins Street.  Set away from the main central business district and the road, The Park Hyatt seems to be enveloped in a quiet atmosphere.

Once inside the building, The Lounge & Garden is in the middle of the lobby.  I was seated at the far end of the lounge, near the piano.  Unfortunately, there was no live music while I was there.

Their tea includes a glass of sparkling along with Jing tea and 3-tiered stand.  They also clearly indicated that the scones would be served with chantilly cream.  FullSizeRender_3

IMG_2565The food was good; the high point being the sandwiches, which were plentiful.  It was interesting that they put the hot savory on the same plate as the petit fours.

The low points of this tea were the large tour groups milling back and forth through the lobby (taking a million photos and talking loudly) and the lack of service.  Once again, the waitstaff was virtually unseen (which seems to be a trend in Australia).  There also wasn’t any garden that I noticed, contrary to the name.

The Park Hyatt wouldn’t be one of my top choices in Melbourne, but wouldn’t be the worst choice you could make either.
