I decided to go back to The Hotel Windsor Melbourne to try their afternoon tea on a weekday since I had a good experience at their weekend tea before. On weekdays the their tea is a little different. Instead of having the dessert bar like on the weekends, they come around periodically with additional sandwiches that you can take freely (a plus for the savory inclined).
Going on a weekday, I thought that there wouldn’t be that many people. As before, I was surprised at how popular The Windsor is. Being the best overall tea that I had in Melbourne, I can understand why there were a lot of people. Although on the weekends, there were visibly more men than during the week (not surprising at all).
Having gone not too long before, the menu was pretty similar, in the sandwich department, to the weekend menu except for the sweets. As before, the sandwiches were yummy; and with the option to take additional sandwiches, you wouldn’t leave hungry.
The warm savories were ok, but I was surprised at how empty the eclair was. Almost no porcini filling at all!
The scones were good again, although the service throughout was much worse than before. I had to wait for quite a while before the scones came out. We had pretty good service (for Australia) last time, so I was surprised when I had to seek out the waitstaff for tea, etc.
Of the sweets, my favorite was the Heart of Gold cake. It had a really nice balance of sweet and sour.
Once again, they had a nice flower arrangement in the lobby of the hotel, which is always a lovely touch.
Overall, The Windsor didn’t disappoint in the tea and food areas. The service was a bit lacking this time, and the number of patrons can’t be used as an excuse. Even still, a nice way to spend the afternoon on a chilly day in Melbourne.
