Afternoon Tea at Bistro Fifteen, The Pelham London

London, UK
September 2015

The Pelham London is found just to the outside of the South Kensington Station.  The Pelham is known as a small boutique hotel with the Bistro Fifteen to match.  Instead of entering through the hotel lobby, you can enter the lower ground floor bistro by the exterior entrance to the side.

Being the lower ground floor, the restaurant is darker than pictured on their website.  Even still, the atmosphere is a little like being in a colorful library in one corner and at the opposite end in a cellar bar.

FullSizeRender_1Along with the teas listed on their tea menu, they also have the regulars you would expect (English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Earl Gray, etc.).  Normally, you only are allowed to pick one type of tea that you can refill with hot water.  Luckily, I was offered to have another choice and took them up on their offer.  I chose the Toxin Killer Tea, which ended up being an herbal tea with the distinct flavor of lemongrass.  (The descriptions on the menu don’t really give you too much of an idea about what they taste like…)

The Bistro offers 3 different choices on their menu: cream tea, vintage afternoon tea, and champagne afternoon tea.  I went with the vintage afternoon tea, of course.

Presented on a single slate platter, the savories and sweets came out together.  The sandwiches were tasty and plentiful, including the cucumber, egg, and salmon sandwiches that you would expect with a little bit of a twist in flavoring.  The scones came out still warm and moist.  Surprisingly, the scones stayed warm the till I was ready to eat them (about 30 minutes later).  The sweets were all yummy, but my favorite was the fruit tart.  The triple chocolate pot cream should also be enjoyed!

I went on a weekday afternoon, so it was really quiet with only 1 or 2 other patrons the whole time I was there.  The food was rather tasty.  The service was also good; they didn’t come around too often.  I’d recommend it if you’re in the area and want a very reasonably priced option.
