Afternoon Tea at Avista, Millennium Hotel London Mayfair

London, UK
June 2016

The Millennium Hotel Mayfair is a 6 minute walk from Bond Street Station and just to the south of Grosvenor Square Garden.  Avista is an Italian restaurant in the hotel, but also where they serve afternoon tea.  Avista has received 3 Rosettes from the AA Food Guide, so I was hoping to get quality food.

The facade of the building is pretty imposing, but the inside was cleanly decorated.

They had a pretty decent tea menu, but once again, you only get to choose one tea.

The tea set was cute with its strawberry motif.  The 3-tiered stand was standard as well.

The sandwiches were pretty sad.  Once again, the cucumber sandwiches were soggy.  Why is it so hard to get this right?  The other sandwiches were edible, but not that tasty.

The scones on the otherhand were pretty good, served with clotted cream, lemon curd, and strawberry preserves.  I would have preferred for them to be slightly crustier, but they were nice and fluffy on the inside.

The sweets were also a letdown.  The cake was dry and just not tasty.  The brûlée had no crust.  Everything else was fine, just not that good.

Since I was in good company, it made this tea experience significantly better.  Maybe the regular Italian menu is good, and they don’t really prepare the afternoon tea.  I don’t know, but I wouldn’t suggest coming here to tea at least.
