Afternoon Tea at The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, Fortnum & Mason

London, UK
June 2016

Fortnum & Mason is located almost exactly between Piccadilly Circus and Green Park Stations, both around a 5 minute walk.  Being one of the most famous places to take afternoon tea, I was pretty excited to have a good experience.

The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon is on the top floor of the expansive Fortnum & Mason shop.  It is definitely worth taking a look on the other floors!

The menu is pretty expansive, but you can see some samples of the menu on their website (link at the end, as usual).  Depending on the type of tea you want, the price of your afternoon tea changes.

The sandwiches were pretty good.  There weren’t any real standouts, but they were all tasty.

The scones were very good though.  Nice and fluffy on the inside, with a crust on the outside.  They were also served with clotted cream, and Fortnum & Mason branded jams.

It was at this point that things went really wrong.  A large wedding party came and took over 2 tables.  As soon as they came in, we couldn’t find anyone and didn’t receive any service at all.  They had lots of waitstaff in the salon, but just did not allocate them properly.  We weren’t able to order tea, we weren’t offered any refills of anything (Fortnum & Mason give you free flow of sandwiches, scones, and sweets), and we weren’t offered any cake.

The sweets were all quite good with distinct flavors.  The choux pastry was my favorite, but I would happily eat any of them again.

Eventually I had to ask for the cake selection and had them pack it to go.  They had Victoria sponge and chocolate mousse, so we got a slice of each.

The factor that really affected the overall experience was the large group.  They were loud and taking flash photos the entire time they were there.  They were also rather demanding on the waitstaff (1 person for our entire section).  Because of all of this, the atmosphere and service suffered significantly.

I’m not sure if I would recommend going, but I can’t fully discredit them either.  I would just hope that you aren’t seated in a section with a large group.
